1999 Tacoma

One of TLT’s newest acquisitions, this Tacoma will be in a different direction that might upset some off-road enthusiasts. Our plans to build an AWD S-Runner include lowering the ride-height by 1-2” (from stock) by lowering the adjustable Donahoe coil-overs n and re-mounting the rear leaf springs under the axle.

The stock 4WD transfer-case is getting replaced with an AWD ‘multi-mode’ 4Runner transfer-case that will allow us to run AWD on-road instead of just 4-hi. We have to convert this vehicle to a push-button transfer-case at the same time, but this doesn’t look like it will be any big deal. This should be a really interesting series of tech. articles and would make a great upgrade for any Tacoma.

The TRD E-locker rear axle is getting replaced with a non-TRD unit and both differentials (front & rear) will use Detroit Truetrac gear-driven limited slip differentials. Axle gearing depends on the final tire size, but we’re working with a set of 265/70/17” tires mounted on 17” ‘05 Limited 4Runner rims right now. Hopefully, the additional backspacing will allow the rear tires to tuck into the bedsides on compression travel.
